FAM eye four-nations tournament, friendlies for Scorchers WAFCON preps
Football Association of Malawi is planning to host a four-nations Womens tournament as part of thorough preparations for the Scorchers ahead of the Womens African Cup of Nations scheduled for next year in Morocco.
This has been said by the Association's president, Fleetwood Haiya, on Thursday when making a statement in celebration of the team's WAFCON qualification.
He said FAM is happy to see that Malawi has for the very first time qualified for the continental tournament and highlighted that this was their vision to fulfill in his manifesto.
"Previously when the team played games it was just COSAFA and they needed to wait again for another COSAFA tournament but we put much effort on the team and after their COSAFA win two years ago, we saw potential thats why we invested a lot. That equal salary with Flames is part of that," said Haiya.
He also said that they have set plans for proper preparations as they
want the team to go to World Cup if they finish into the top four of the WAFCON tournament as it will act as World Cup qualifiers to be achieved by teams to reach in the semi finals.
"We are planning to have more friendlies and at point in time to host the four nations Womens tournament. We will target at least two countries that have also qualified for the WAFCON and to save costs and other things, it will be played here [in Malawi] so once done we will confirm the teams to come," he added.
Haiya thanked all the sponsors whose help led to the qualification of the team and National Bank of Malawi earned much praise for their package at the Scorchers and National Womens Premiership.
He finally expressed his disatisfaction over Confederations of African Football's decision to add four countries at the WAFCON who did not qualify but chosen due to FIFA rankings to take the tally of teams to 16 from 12 as this could complicate their top four hopes with the adjustment.
